Chiari malformation type I

Chiari malformation type I is a condition where part of the brain, called the cerebellar tonsils, is lower than its normal position. In this condition, the cerebellar tonsils move more than 5mm downwards through the opening at the base of the skull, known as the foramen magnum. People with this condition may experience a range of symptoms. In some cases, the condition can be present without causing any symptoms, while in others it may lead to various neurological issues. The condition is classified under Arnold-Chiari malformation type I, and its name reflects its association with these specific brain changes.

People with Chiari malformation type I may experience symptoms like headaches felt at the back of the head, neck pain, and dizziness. Other reported symptoms include ringing in the ears, vision problems such as seeing double or blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and unsteady movement. In addition, some may have signs related to the nerves in the lower part of the brain and difficulty with coordination. However, some individuals do not report any symptoms at all.
