Chuvash polycythemia

Chuvash polycythemia is a rare genetic condition present from birth. It is characterized by higher than normal levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and erythropoietin in the blood. This condition is known as a congenital secondary polycythemia. People with this condition often experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, and a ruddy appearance (plethora). The disorder is linked to mutations in the VHL gene and is sometimes called Chuvash erythrocytosis or VHL familial polycythemia.
