Duane retraction syndrome 3 with or without deafness

Duane retraction syndrome type 3 is a disorder that affects eye movement. People with this condition have an eye or eyes that have difficulty moving inward toward the nose and outward toward the ears. When looking inward, the opening of the eye may narrow and the eyeball may pull back slightly. About 15 percent of all Duane syndrome cases are type 3. Most cases are not accompanied by other signs or symptoms, and for the majority of people, the exact cause of the disorder is not known.

The main symptoms involve restricted eye movement. The affected eye(s) show limited ability to move both inward and outward, and the opening of the eye can narrow when looking toward the nose. This pattern of eye movement distinguishes this condition.

In many people with Duane syndrome type 3, the exact cause is unknown. However, in some cases, the condition has been linked to genetic changes. The known genes related to this condition include MAFB, and in some descriptions, mutations in a gene called CHN1 have been mentioned. When a genetic cause is identified, the disorder can be inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern.
