POEMS syndrome

POEMS syndrome is a rare condition that stands for a group of features: polyradiculoneuropathy (nerve problems), organomegaly (enlarged organs), endocrinopathy (hormone issues), a clonal plasma cell disorder (abnormal plasma cell growth), and skin changes. This combination of symptoms makes it a unique paraneoplastic syndrome, meaning it occurs as a result of an underlying plasma cell disorder. Other features that may be seen in people with this condition include papilledema (swelling in the eyes), extra fluid buildup in the body, sclerotic bone lesions (hardening areas in the bones), abnormal blood cell counts with thrombocytosis or erythrocytosis, and elevated levels of VEGF, a protein that affects blood vessel growth. These characteristics together help doctors recognize and study this syndrome.

People with POEMS syndrome often experience nerve problems that can cause weakness or numbness, enlarged organs, hormone imbalances, and changes in the skin. Other signs include vision issues like papilledema, fluid build-up in the body, hardened bone lesions, and changes in blood counts such as increased platelets or red blood cells.
