IgG4-related pachymeningitis

IgG4-related pachymeningitis, also known as idiopathic hypertrophic pachymeningitis, is a rare condition in which the dura, the outer layer of the brain and spinal cord, becomes inflamed and thickened. This thickening may occur in a widespread manner or create tumor-like lesions that can affect brain function and the nerves that control various parts of the body. Before a diagnosis is made, healthcare providers rule out other conditions including sarcoidosis, tumors, infections such as syphilis, tuberculosis, and Lyme disease, as well as several autoimmune diseases. This careful process is necessary because the symptoms of this condition can overlap with many other health issues.

People with this condition may experience headaches and issues related to cranial nerve function. These symptoms can vary in severity, and some individuals may even have few or no symptoms.

The specific cause of IgG4-related pachymeningitis is not well understood. In many cases, the condition is termed idiopathic, meaning that a cause is not known.
