Mills syndrome

Mills syndrome is a rare, acquired motor neuron disease that is characterized by a slowly progressive loss of muscle strength on one side of the body. The condition shows a pattern of either an ascending or descending weakness (hemiplegia) and is noted for its presentation with unusual pyramidal signs, meaning that the nerve pathways controlling movement are affected. There is some controversy about whether certain features such as bulbar symptoms (affecting speech and swallowing), sphincter disturbances, fasciculations (small muscle twitches), or cognitive changes are part of Mills syndrome. Because the disease does not involve sensory loss, its diagnosis relies on excluding other conditions.

People with this condition typically experience a slowly progressive weakness that affects one side of the body. They may show signs of problems with the nerve pathways that control movement, such as increased reflex responses. Other symptoms, including issues with speech, swallowing, bladder or bowel control, and muscle twitching, have been reported, but it is still debated whether these consistently occur in Mills syndrome.
