Leber congenital amaurosis is an inherited retinal disorder that causes severe visual impairment or blindness from infancy. It arises when genetic changes disrupt normal photoreceptor development or function in the eye, leading to an almost absent electrical response of the retina and markedly reduced vision within the first year of life. Pathogenic variants have been identified in several different genes, each important for maintaining healthy retinal cells. Males and females are affected equally, and the condition is considered uncommon, affecting roughly 1 to 9 in 100,000 people worldwide.
